Rome, Wednesday, December 16, 2020: at the Museum of Classical Art (Faculty of Humanities – Sapienza University of Rome) the conclusion of the educational laboratory of the Sapienza Archaeological Mission in Iran (SAMIra) is celebrated with the presentation of the material developed by the students.
The event will be attended by His Excellency Hamid Bayat, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Italy, and the Magnificent Rector Antonella Polimeni. The exhibition, entitled “Beyond the columns of Media”, is divided into 16 panels that aim to take the visitor on a journey to explore one of the main axes of the extensive communication network known as the “Silk Road”. In this case, attention is focused on the stretch that crossed the heart of the historical region of Media and that, over the centuries, became a place of transition between the Mesopotamian Plain and the Iranian Plateau. The exhibition follows a diachronic development that starts from the evidence of the Iron Age to the Achaemenids, Arsacids and Sasanians. These dynasties significantly shaped the territory by creating monumental sites celebrating representation and royal glory.

The exhibition, supported by the Italian Embassy in Tehran and Ambassador Giuseppe Perrone, is the result of the synergy between SAMIra-DiSA and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This collaboration, born in 2019, has made it possible to launch an articulated project aimed at studying and enhancing the archaeological heritage of the province of Kermanshah. The field activities, conducted jointly with the Iranian counterpart, have focused on the documentation of the architectural evidence of the monumental site of Kangavar and have seen the participation of a large group of Sapienza students and PhD students.
